Greek musicians, as well as international stars who visited the country, made jazz popular in Greece since the 30’s. After the end of WW2, many acclaimed composers embraced this music idiom and the late 70’s marked the breakthrough of modern jazz in Greece and the beginning of a remarkable discography. The development of music education with the creation of the jazz department at the Ionian University as well as the modern conservatories, has also played a very important role in recent years.

Greece has at the time little dedicated Jazz venues, but fortunately a very active Jazz community and Jazz performances in many different bars and small venues especially in the countries capital Athens.
